The National Guard was called in to fight the crisis.

San Francisco is about to receive help from state authorities, including the California National Guard, to combat the city’s deadly fentanyl epidemic.

The governor made a surprise visit to the Tenderloin neighborhood. The governor told why on Friday.

The California National Guard, California Highway Patrol, San Francisco Police Department, and the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office will assist the city with its ongoing Fentanyl crisis.

Fentanyl street drug dealers are poison peddlers.

According to data released by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, 200 people died from accidental drug overdoses in San Francisco between January and March this year. Fentanyl is a highly addictive and cheap synthetic opiate.

The Governor’s Office wrote that there had been a 40% increase in overdose deaths from January to March of this year.

Drug markets are open air.

The Governor’s Office wrote that the new operation would focus on disrupting the supply of Fentanyl into the city by holding the operators of large scale drug trafficking operations accountable.

The governor directed the California National Guard to identify specialist personnel and resources to support analysis of drug trafficking operations, with a particular focus on dismantling Fentanyl trafficking rings.

Through this new partnership, we are providing more law enforcement resources and personnel to crack down on crime linked to the Fentanyl crisis, holding the poison peddlers accountable, and increasing law enforcement presence to improve public safety and public confidence in San Francisco.

According to the Governor’s Office, the partnership will not seek to criminalize people struggling with substance use.

San Francisco had an all time high of 725 fatal drug overdoses in 2020. According to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, San Francisco recorded more than 600 overdose deaths in two years. The majority of Fentanyl linked deaths are in the South of Market neighborhoods.
